The Washington Center

UNC Charlotte is offering a unique educational experience to students seeking internships and other learning opportunities during the upcoming 2020 National Conventions. Through an exclusive partnership, The Washington Center (TWC) and UNC Charlotte are offering 10 full scholarships (valued at $4,300 each) for students to attend the 2020 conventions. UNC Charlotte and TWC first partnered for this program during the 2012 Democratic National Convention, when Charlotte also served as the host city.

The Republican National Convention will be in Charlotte August 24-27, 2020; the Democratic National Convention will be in Milwaukee July 13-16. TWC’s programing covers two weeks: the week prior to the convention consists of academic seminars (including speeches from people responsible for executing the convention), and internships and fieldwork during the week of the convention. Students seeking to attend the DNC in Milwaukee will have their fees and housing covered by the scholarship but would need to pay for transportation, food, and other incidentals.

TWC, a respected nonpartisan, not-for-profit educational organization, partners with universities, government agencies and public and private organizations to introduce college-age students with an interest in government, media and related careers to an intensive, behind-the-scenes look into the political process during the national convention. They will provide a range of courses, forums and volunteer opportunities for UNC Charlotte students and those visiting from other campuses. Student participants will have the opportunity to interact with political insiders, attend exclusive events and engage in on-site fieldwork with media outlets, advocacy groups, host committees, state delegations and other organizations connected to the convention.

Applications for the scholarship will be due Wednesday, February 19, and will include a letter of interest, a resume, your GPA, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Full time students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply. Students who are not graduating in spring 2020 will have priority.
